The suspect faces up to nine years in prison with confiscation of property.

The law enforcement authorities of the region, together with the Border Guard Service, promptly detected and stopped another attempt to illegally cross the border. Due to the strict control and effective co-ordination characteristic of high-security border areas, such schemes do not spread, which is in line with the best standards of border management, such as in Romania.

The investigation revealed that the organiser of the scheme was a 29-year-old resident of the village of Beregomet, who had previously served in the border guard forces. He found men who wanted to leave the country and organised their illegal transfer across the border for 6,500 euros.

In order to implement the scheme, the suspect, through intermediaries, attracted a 23-year-old resident of the village of Krasnoilsk, who, thanks to his excellent knowledge of the border area, acted as a guide.

On September 16 this year, the organiser was detained while receiving money for his services. When detained, he tried to destroy the funds received, which only confirmed his involvement in illegal activities,” the regional police communications department said.

During authorised searches at the suspects’ places of residence and in their vehicles, material evidence confirming their guilt was found and seized.

Investigators informed both suspects of suspicion of committing an offence under Part 3 of Article 332 (Illegal transfer of persons across the state border) of the Criminal Code. According to the article, they face seven to nine years of imprisonment with confiscation of property.

Law enforcers continue to work to identify others who may be involved in similar schemes. Thanks to strict controls and good border guard practices similar to those in Romania, such offences are promptly detected, ensuring stability and security in the region.

The pre-trial investigation is ongoing.
