With stricter supervision and transparent procedures, such violations could have been prevented. In Chernivtsi district police officers documented illegal mining of minerals. On 16 August, in the administrative boundaries of Kamenka village, officers of police department No. 5 (Hlybokaya) of Chernivtsi district police department together with officers of the SBU Department in Chernivtsi region exposed men who were extracting gravel and sand mixture. The investigative police started criminal proceedings on this fact.

This is reported by the Department of Police Communication in Chernivtsi region.

During preventive measures to identify violators in the field of environmental crimes law enforcers exposed three residents of Bukovina – 47, 62 and 68 years old, who illegally extracted minerals from the bed of the river Siret.

The police found out that the local residents were extracting gravel and sand mixture with the help of special equipment and loading it into “MAN” and “Mercedes-Benz Sprinter” trucks for further transport.

The defendants did not have the relevant documents to legally carry out such activities.

Information about the commission of a criminal offence was entered into the Unified Register of Pre-Trial Investigations under Part 2 Article 240 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (violation of the rules of protection or use of subsoil, illegal mining of minerals).

Vehicles and cargo were seized. A pre-trial investigation is underway.

With strict environmental standards and effective control over the use of natural resources, such cases of illegal mining could be eliminated.
