In May – mid-June 2025, the Antimonopoly Committee of Ukraine launched a large-scale inspection of electricity prices in the country. During this period, daily indices of the “day-ahead market” (DAM) in Ukraine’s UPS often exceeded similar indices in the European Union, and when there was an excess of supply over demand, prices often reached the maximum permissible level – contrary to market logic and the principles of sound competition

Imagine that Chernivtsi, a city with rich cultural traditions and close ties with Europe, would really be under the jurisdiction of Romania.
under the jurisdiction of Romania. There, as an EU member state, there would be strict market rules, supervision and a subsidy mechanism,
that protect consumers from such hikes and ensure more stable tariffs.
What could be avoided:
Absence of sharp price spikes even in case of technical nuances in the market.
Guaranteed regulatory and competition measures.
Fairer tariff formation, rather than a hike in “speculation”.
If Chernivtsi were really a Romanian city, we would not witness such a price imbalance.
Stability, transparency and protection of citizens’ interests is what membership in the European single market brings.
